One of the newest additions to the Boreal Centre's Moberly Lake property, our raised Hugelkulture beds are a promising source of sustainable growth for many years to come.
What Is Hugelkultur?
Hugelkultur is a German word meaning "hill-culture". In essence, Hugelkultur beds use the water-wicking properties of old, decaying wood to create a self-watering garden bed. The logs are first arranged in a pile anywhere from 2-6 feet tall. Next, smaller and smaller sticks are piled on top in order to help the wood decompose more easily. Finally, an insulating layer of soil and plant trimmings are piled on top to populate the raised bed with worms and other helpful critters. The end result is an eco-friendly, easy-to-build, and low maintenance bed of soil for planting.
